The central feature of
the Arms is the Eagle; which is the ancient House Symbol of the
Nicolson’s Norse ancestors, coming from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
Then at Dubhlinn and Jorvik (York), and latterly on to the Outer
Hebrides and at the N.W. Highlands, at Assynt and Coigach. The
Nicolsons held Lewis and Harris for over three centuries. |
 |
The Red Kite, which
features as the Crest on the Arms, is the ancient Symbol of The Clan
Nicolson dating back to the ninth century. The Red Kite as a symbol
came to the Nicolsons after the result of a battle for territory in
the Western Isles of Scotland with their cousins the Vikings, who were
lead by the great Ragnar Lodbrok, King of Sweden and Denmark. On that
day many Nicolson Clansmen were lost and, upon that bloody site, hawks
were seen flying overhead. As Ragnar Lodbrok said of it "The Kites
were grieved for the loss of their friends ", after this day the
Nicolson Chiefs would carry on their shield three red Hawks’ Heads. |
