The Arms of James Christopher Michael Devereaux

The Arms give a simple nod to his French Devereaux linage combined with elements of the armigerís New Zealand linage. The Armiger was born in NZ in 1947, his mother and maternal grandparents being of British extraction and his father a New Zealander of European lineage. He has lived and travelled overseas extensively as a child including the South of England for two separate years and Fiji for a period of two and a half years.

The armigerís Tertiary studies were at the University of Auckland, graduating with a BSc in 1969, and MSc (Chemistry) in 1973 followed by a period as a research chemist for three years.

After a few years in the Real Estate Industry the armiger founded the Auction House, Devereaux & Culley Ltd, which offered Fine Art, Antiques, Jewellery, etc. together with Real Estate. In 1986 the business merged with another Auction house. In late 1989 the armiger formed an association with Webbís, bringing to it his established business as a Jewellery Auctioneer & Consultant. To observe global trends and fashions in the high-end diamond, jewellery and watch industries he travelled regularly to Europe and the East and occasionally to the UK.

Mr. Devereaux has been involved in the support structures of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) for over ten years, first holding office as President of the Auckland Philharmonia Guild, then as a member of the Board of Advisers and finally as Vice-President of the Board standing down in 1997 after being awarded Life Membership of the Orchestra Society. In 1998, he joined the advisory board for the post-graduate degree of Master of Arts in Arts Administration at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design and in 2003 he was invited to join the Governance Board of the College up until 2007.

The armigerís interests in History and Museology saw him become a member and Patron of the Auckland Museum Circle Foundation, joining the executive committee in 2006, and accepting the Chair of both it and its associated Trust in November 2008, which position he still holds. The Museum Circle was set up some ten years ago as a vehicle for leading New Zealand families and philanthropists to have social and economic involvement with the Museum

The armiger is an active fundraiser for the SPCA, the APO, NZ Opera, Red Cross, SAFE, UNICEF, Animals Asia, Childrenís Hospitals, Rodney Hospice, Ronald MacDonald House and The Variety Club. Although retired from business in August 2014, the armiger remains active in his philanthropic work.

Mr. Devereaux is a Knight Commander of the Casa Real de Braganza of Portugal and has been awarded the Venerable Order of St John Priory Vote of Thanks, presented by the Governor General. His interests include History, Literature, the Arts including Music & Opera, Boating, Residential Development, Motorcars and Travel.
